Quick answer: Choose Punta Cana for wide, quiet beaches, a short airport transfer and good-value all-inclusive resorts where you rarely leave the property. Choose Cancún if you want more to do off the beach, such as Mayan ruins, cenotes, Playa del Carmen and nightlife. Both are about four hours from much of the eastern US, and both have the same June to November hurricane season.

What is the main difference between Punta Cana and Cancún?

Punta Cana is a resort destination: most visitors stay at an all-inclusive on Bávaro or Uvero Alto beach and leave for one or two excursions. Cancún is a base for exploring: the Hotel Zone has big resorts too, but the Yucatán Peninsula around it has ruins, swimming holes, islands and towns within a day trip.

Which is cheaper, Punta Cana or Cancún?

Punta Cana is usually cheaper for an all-inclusive stay. It has a large supply of big all-inclusive resorts, and nearly everything is included, so there are few extra costs once you arrive. Cancún often has cheaper flights, because more US cities fly there nonstop and more airlines compete on the route. If you plan paid excursions most days, Cancún’s extra costs add up quickly.

The fastest way to know is to price the same week in both places. Check flights on our flights page and resort rates on our hotels page, then add the entry fees and transfers from the table above.

Which has better beaches?

For a classic wide, quiet beach right outside your room, Punta Cana wins. Bávaro and Macao beaches are long and mostly lined with low-rise resorts. Cancún’s water is just as clear. The Hotel Zone’s east-facing beaches can have strong waves and red-flag days, while the beaches facing Isla Mujeres, and those down the coast in Playa del Carmen, are calmer.

Seaweed affects both. Sargassum seaweed washes up on both coasts in many years, mostly from spring to late summer. Some resorts clear it every morning. If a clean beach is your top priority, check recent guest photos for your exact resort and dates.

Which is better for families?

Punta Cana is easier with small children. Transfers are short, the beaches are calmer, and resorts have kids’ clubs and waterparks, so you don’t need to plan outings. Cancún suits families with older children who will enjoy snorkelling in cenotes, Xcaret-style parks and day trips to ruins.

Which is better for nightlife and things to do?

Cancún, clearly. The Hotel Zone has clubs and bars within walking distance, and Playa del Carmen’s Fifth Avenue is busy every night. Beyond nightlife, you can see Chichén Itzá (one of the New Seven Wonders), swim in cenotes, or take the ferry to Isla Mujeres. Punta Cana’s nightlife is mostly inside the resorts. Book either destination’s excursions on our tours page.

Is it safe to travel to Punta Cana and Cancún?

Millions of visitors go to both every year without problems. Both the Dominican Republic and the state of Quintana Roo (where Cancún is) have US State Department travel advisories. These usually ask travellers to exercise increased caution and mainly concern areas away from the resorts. Read the current advisory for each country before you book, use licensed taxis or pre-booked transfers, and don’t carry large amounts of cash.

Do you need travel insurance for either trip?

Both destinations sit inside the Atlantic hurricane belt. If you travel between August and October, buy insurance before a storm is named, because a named storm is no longer covered. Our guide to Caribbean travel insurance in hurricane season explains what is and isn’t covered. Compare policies on our travel insurance page.

What about Aruba instead?

If hurricanes worry you, consider Aruba. It sits south of the main storm track, so direct hits are rare. It costs more, so see our Aruba trip cost breakdown first.
