Quick answer

The EU Entry/Exit System (EES) has been fully running since 10 April 2026: non-EU visitors give fingerprints and a photo at the border instead of getting a passport stamp. It is free. ETIAS, the online pre-travel authorisation, has not launched yet and has no confirmed start date. When it starts it will cost €20 for adults aged 18–70.

What happens at the border with EES?

On your first entry to a country using EES, border staff scan your passport, take your fingerprints and a facial photo. On later trips, a face check is usually enough. The system records each entry and exit to count your 90 days in any 180-day period automatically.

Do you need ETIAS right now?

No. ETIAS is not yet operating, so you can't apply and no one can ask you for it. The EU dropped its "last quarter of 2026" target, and a new date has not been confirmed. The EU says it will announce the date several months ahead.

ETIAS detailWhat is known
Fee€20 per application
Free forUnder-18s and over-70s (they still need approval)
Validity3 years, or until your passport expires
Where to applyOnly the official EU site or app, once it opens

How do you avoid ETIAS scam sites?

Many websites already "sell" ETIAS applications for much more than €20. Until the EU opens the official service, any site taking payment for ETIAS is not the real thing.

Is the UK part of this?

No. The UK has its own Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA). See our UK ETA guide.
