Quick answer: Travel insurance isn’t required for the Caribbean, but it is worth buying for any trip between June 1 and November 30, and especially for August to October. The key rule is timing: once a storm has a name, a new policy won’t cover it. Buy insurance soon after you pay your first deposit. If you want the option to cancel for any reason, you usually have to add it within 14 to 21 days of that deposit.
When is Caribbean hurricane season?
The Atlantic hurricane season officially runs from June 1 to November 30. Most storms form from mid-August to mid-October, and the season typically peaks around September 10. Early-season storms do happen, though. In 2024, Hurricane Beryl hit the eastern Caribbean in early July and disrupted thousands of trips.
Does travel insurance cover hurricanes?
Yes, as long as you bought the policy before the storm was named. From the moment a storm is named, it counts as a “foreseeable event” and new policies exclude it. If you bought in time, a standard policy can cover:
- Trip cancellation: if your destination is hit or declared uninhabitable, or if your airline stops flying for a set number of hours (often 24 to 48).
- Trip interruption: the unused part of your trip and a flight home if you have to leave early.
- Trip delay: hotel and meals while you wait for a rebooked flight.
- Missed connections, baggage delay and emergency medical care.
- Emergency evacuation: one of the most valuable benefits on small islands.
What usually isn’t covered: cancelling just because a storm is in the forecast, or because you’d rather not go. For that you need the add-on below.
What is “Cancel For Any Reason” cover, and is it worth it?
Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR) is an optional upgrade that lets you cancel for any reason at all, including a worrying forecast. The catches:
- You usually have to buy it within 14 to 21 days of your first trip deposit.
- It typically reimburses 50% to 75% of your prepaid, non-refundable costs, not 100%.
- You normally have to cancel at least 48 hours before departure.
- It adds roughly 40% to 50% to the price of the policy.
CFAR is worth it for an expensive, non-refundable trip in September or October. It is less useful if your resort and airline already offer free changes.
How much does travel insurance for the Caribbean cost?
Comprehensive trip insurance often costs about 5% to 10% of your prepaid trip cost. The price depends mostly on the travellers’ ages and how much trip cost you insure. A medical-only policy, which doesn’t cover cancellation, is much cheaper. Get at least three quotes for the same trip and compare the exclusions, not just the price. Use our travel insurance page to compare.
Doesn’t my credit card already cover this?
Some premium travel credit cards include trip cancellation and delay cover when you pay for the trip with that card. The limits are often lower, and medical and evacuation cover is often missing. Check three things in your card’s benefit guide: the per-trip limit, whether weather counts as a covered reason, and whether emergency medical evacuation is included.
Which Caribbean islands are least affected by hurricanes?
Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao (the “ABC islands”) sit south of the main hurricane track, so direct hits are rare. Storms elsewhere can still cancel connecting flights, however, so insurance is still useful. If you are flexible, see our guides to the best time to visit Aruba and what an Aruba trip costs. Punta Cana and Cancún are both inside the belt. Our Punta Cana vs Cancún comparison explains how they differ.
What should you do if a storm is forecast before your trip?
- Check your airline’s travel alerts. Airlines often issue free change waivers once a storm is forecast.
- Call your hotel or resort. Many offer free rebooking during an active storm warning.
- Read your policy’s cancellation triggers before you cancel anything. Cancelling too early can void your claim.
- Keep every receipt, including for meals, extra hotel nights and taxis.
