January to March is the best all-round time for Cancún: dry, warm and usually little seaweed. November and early December are a close second and often cheaper. June to September is the riskiest time, as peak sargassum season overlaps with the Atlantic hurricane season (1 June to 30 November).

How do you avoid sargassum?
- Stay on the Cancún Hotel Zone's north-facing beaches or Isla Mujeres, which are often less affected than the Riviera Maya further south.
- Check a live seaweed report a few days before you go.
- Pick a resort with a pool you'd enjoy anyway.
What if you travel in hurricane season?
